USER DOCUMENTATION FOR INTRIGUE Version 1.0
~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~ ~~~
Introduction:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome to a new concept in BBS gaming! INTRIGUE is a BBS door game
that runs entirely from a terminal program. INTRIGUE is a strategy
game played by 7 players who represent rulers of different nations.
If your sysop has a registered copy of INTRIGUE, he may have one of
many scenarios set up for you to play, but all copies of INTRIGUE
include the World War I (WWI) scenario. Since INTRIGUE is a strategy
game, you will need time to think about your moves and to conspire
with other players about strategies, etc. INTRIGUE is unique in that
you may do almost all of your planning on your own time, thus saving
valuable time on your local BBS'. In this game, the BBS acts literally
as a bulletin board just keeping updates and necessary information for
players to obtain when they log in. All documentation is included in
the terminal program included in this ZIP package. The purpose of this
file is to explain to you how to set up and use your terminal program of
INTRIGUE and also provide a few details about game play.

What You Need To Play
~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~ ~~ ~~~~
To play INTRIGUE, it is highly recommended that you have an EGA or
VGA color monitor. A CGA color monitor will work, although the
maps will be "snowy". Tandy monitors will work fine, except that
the special characters we have designed for the game will revert
back to their original ANSI assignments. Monochrome monitors are
not recommended due to the game's heavy reliance on color.
Registration
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Registration for the terminal program of INTRIGUE is optional. The
game may be played unobstructed or uncrippled using the contents of
this ZIP package. Registration of the term gives the user some added
features that are useful and convenient for dedicated game players. For
more information about registration, read the directions below for installing
INTRIGUE, and then type INTRIGUE from the INTRIGUE directory, hit <Esc>, and
choose the Utilities menu.

Installation
~~~~~~~~~~~~
To play INTRIGUE online as a door on a BBS, you must have the ability
to shell to DOS from your communications program and run the program
INTRIGUE.EXE. If your communications program allows you to install
external protocols, you may wish to set up INTRIGUE in this fashion.
We include an example set up for someone using the TELIX communication
package.
1) First of all, on your hard drive, make a directory to store all the
contents of INTTRM10.ZIP. Let's say you call the directory
C:\TELIX\INTRIGUE.
2) Unzip INTTRM10.ZIP into this directory.
3) Go into telix and set up an external protocol called INTRIGUE. This is
done by hitting alt-o and choosing protocol options. Pick a protocol
and then answer the questions by entering "I" for the first choice, and
"intrigue" for the next 3 choices. Choose "batch" and "N" for the last
2 choices. Exit and then write settings to disk.
4) Copy INTRIGUE.BAT from your newly created directory into the directory
Telix is running from and change the path name we have to your path name.
Playing INTRIGUE
~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
There are two ways to play INTRIGUE, and both serve different purposes.
LOCAL MODE means you are not connected with a BBS. REMOTE MODE means
you are playing online on a BBS. The very first time you run the INTRIGUE
batch file, make sure you are not connected with a BBS. You will be
prompted for a comm port number. After giving the program the desired
information, you will be sent into the game, which is the WWI scenario.
Initially, everyone is assigned ruler of Italy, but since you are not in
any games, this is irrelevant. All options are available in LOCAL MODE,
but if you send any messages or orders, you will only serve to clutter your
hard drive/floppy disk with files. In other words, the SEND MESSAGES and
SEND ORDERS commands are only valid when you are logged on a BBS. The best
use for LOCAL MODE is to look over previous moves made by others, plan
strategy, and prepare for your next turn. When you log on a BBS and open
the INTRIGUE door, you will be presented with a menu asking you what game
you wish to join. If your sysop is not registered, you will only be allowed
to join game 0. If the game is full, you will be shipped all current info
pertaining to that game, so that you may look at it in LOCAL MODE. If you
do not want to destroy information about another game on your disk, do not
choose to join a game in progress. If the game does need players, you will
be asked if you would like to join. If you answer Yes, you will randomly
be assigned a country and shipped all pertinent information for the game.
You may find out what country you are by checking the top bar menu in
either LOCAL or REMOTE MODE. Keep in mind that your program can only store
the last game you logged onto. In other words, if you play a game on BBS
A, and then log on BBS B, the information on the game from BBS A will be
overwritten by the information on the game from BBS B. If you want to
study a particular game you are involved in, make sure you do not join
any other games until you are ready. You are allowed 15 minutes in the
INTRIGUE door. Although this does not seem like much time, you will soon
find out that you are seldom in the door more than 5-6 minutes. If your
sysop has registered INTRIGUE, you will be allowed to join in up to 3
games on his BBS. As far as actual game play, it is very IMPORTANT that
you know when orders are due for the next turn. Turns are resolved every
2 days, so you need to make sure you submit orders in time, or your units
will just defend their regions. For the WWI scenario, play continues
until someone gains 15 or more major cities. When this happens, the game
will wait a couple of days and then reset to start a new game.
Printing the Map
~~~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~
If you have registered a version of INTRIGUE, you will have the ability
to print out the map. You must may sure the dip switches on your printer
are set to print the IBM Mode All Character Set. You may turn the numbers
on, move pieces around, and print the result.
